Morning didn’t come. Or at least, it was yet to arrive when Arlo got up. Or at least, when Arlo left his desk to start the next day.

Words like pitch, yaw, and navlog floated hazily around in his head. He filled up the kettle and put it on the aga, staring out across the fields. The sky wasn’t so black now, more of a charcoal. Before long it would tint blue and steadily reveal all the little details of the fields before him.

For now though it was all a dark blur. Too sleepy to do much else, Arlo just stood there staring out of the window at the murky nothingness of the farm.

The kettle sputtered, then whined, then gently started to whistle at him. Arlo grabbed it off the hob before it shrieked. He tossed a tea bag into a mug, smiling at the whispered ‘phnk’, then gurgled a healthy amount of boiling water onto it.

There was a knock at the backdoor. Arlo grabbed a second mug on his way to opening it. George gave Arlo a quiet nod through hooded eyes and stifled a yawn as he stepped into the kitchen. Arlo made the two mugs in near silence, the pair of them just occasionally grunting a couple of sleepy sentences.

It was only once they’d stepped outside into the damp night air, steaming mugs in hands that they started to wake up. The two of them wandered around the side of the farmhouse to where the tractor and flatbed trailer were parked. They stood side by side, blowing and sipping on their drinks every now and then, waiting for their brains to catch up with where they were.

‘You sure she’ll fit?’ George asked. His voice sounded loud in the empty night.

‘Should do. I measured the wheelbase a few times to make sure. I’m more worried about the suspension on the trailer.’

Arlo strolled over to the trailer and kicked one of the tires. Didn’t really do anything, but that’s what people always did.

‘You sure the quads will be strong enough to pull her up onto it?’

‘We’ll find out soon enough.’

Arlo walked back over to his friend and they finished their mugs in silence. George held out a hand and took Arlo’s from him, disappearing off inside, leaving Arlo to get the garage doors open.

It must have been a long time since the main door had been opened. The lock at the bottom was so stiff, Arlo was convinced he was using the wrong key but eventually, it clicked. With a big tug, Arlo yanked it up and the garage yawned open, squeaking a little on its way.

Arlo got on one of the quads and wheeled it round so that its back was in front of the Thursday’s covered remains, just outside the entrance. George reemerged and did the same with the other quad so the two of them were side by side, like horses in front of a carriage.

Arlo tossed his friend an end of rope and together they walked back to the Thursday, looping the rope around the front landing gear and across the cockpit.
